Florida’s best time of year – strawberry season. Here’s everything you need to know about the season, how strawberries are grown, and why Florida is a top producer of this beloved fruit.
When is Florida Strawberry Season?
You might be surprised to learn Florida strawberries thrive in the winter months. The season runs from late November through April. Unlike other regions, Florida’s cooler (but not freezing) winter temperatures create the perfect conditions for strawberries to thrive.
How do Florida farmers grow strawberries?
Farmers start planting the berries in September, which take about 21 days to produce and ripen fruit from a bloom. Our farmers work diligently to handle all challenges, including any major weather events during planting season, making sure they stay on track to start harvesting in November!
How fresh are the strawberries I buy at the store?
Strawberries are handpicked directly from the plant and packed in the field. As soon as they are picked, the timer begins! They are immediately cooled and transported in refrigerated trucks, to ensure their freshness until they reach you.
Do strawberries ripen after they are picked?
No, strawberries do not continue to ripen once picked. We harvest at peak ripeness to ensure the best flavor possible.
Are there different types of strawberries?
Different varieties have unique characteristics – some are darker red, some are lighter, some have a denser center, while others are hollow. All strawberry varieties are bred through traditional techniques – there are no GMO strawberries.
